Consumer Reports’ Annual Report Card is here! They’ve compiled their report card by looking at the Overall Score for each model based on four key factors: predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, safety, and road-test. They average those numbers together to get the brand’s overall score.

How are the automotive brands ranked in each category? 

• The predicted reliability score is based on any problems reported by members in 17 trouble areas in Consumer Reports’ auto surveys.
• Owner satisfaction predictions come from a Consumer Reports survey where members state whether they would purchase the same car again – if given the chance.
• The safety score includes several crash-test results, with extra points awarded to vehicles that come with proven safety features as a standard on all of their trims.
• For the road-test score, they go through more than 50 evaluations and tests.

There’s also the green choice that reflects how many tested vehicles from a brand have earned the Green Choice designation for being some of the lowest-emitting and cleanest passenger vehicles on the market.
