How to Clean Leather Car Seats

Wiping Down Leather Seat

A car doesn’t have to be new to have leather seats that are in good condition. With proper leather seat care, many of our Valencia customers have been able to maintain the seats in their luxury pre-owned cars for years. We want to help you to do the same, so we’ve put together the guide below on how to clean leather car seats.

Proper Leather Seat Care is Important

Sunlight, especially during our harsh Santa Clarita summers, can do significant damage to leather seats. But there are some simple steps you can take to keep your leather seats looking new. Here are some of those steps:

Important Leather Seat Care Reminders

  • If you can keep your car parked in a garage, under a carport, or under a shade tree, do so.
  • If you have to keep your car parked in the sun, consider buying some inexpensive car shades that you can place behind your windshield and on your windows.
  • Clean leather seats regularly and in the right way!

How to Clean Leather Car Seats Correctly

There are a number of products available at Valencia retailers that are specially formulated to clean leather. But, regardless of which product you use, never allow any water or cleaner to pool in the small holes found in perforated leather, as this can cause lasting harm. It’s always a good idea to spray the cleaner onto your cleaning cloth instead of directly on the seat. Follow these steps:

How to Clean Leather Car Seats the Right Way

  • Gather all of your supplies: a vacuum cleaner, a cleaner made especially for leather, such as saddle soap, two microfiber cloths or a soft-bristled brush, and leather conditioner
  • Gently vacuum the seats, taking care not to rub any dirt in
  • Test the cleaner on a small spot that can’t be easily seen. If the spot is discolored, don’t use the cleaner
  • Spray the cleaner on a microfiber cloth (not the seat), and apply
  • Gently rub in the leather conditioner
